Delta Air Lines and Northwest Airlines say their planned merger that would form the world's biggest airline will create a stronger company better able to withstand high fuel prices and to invest in improved air service and employee training.

Delta and Northwest also say the merged company could save $1 billion a year in costs, and that there are no plans to close any of their combined seven U.S. flight hubs. They hope to obtain regulatory clearance later this year for the merger, which was in the works for months and announced this week.
