THE DEAL

Medications hurt or kill more than 400,000 Americans a year from preventable mistakes in hospitals, and twice that many in long-term care facilities, the Institute of Medicine estimates. Hospital patients average one medication error per day. That figures. Older and sicker patients not only use stronger medications, but also have less resilient bodies for fighting off adverse effects. But despite those risks, only 6 percent of hospitals use computer-entry systems for prescriptions.
