DAYTON - As schools nationwide celebrate the 50-year anniversary of the Brown v. Board of Education decision by the U.S. Supreme Court that outlawed the separation of schoolchildren by race, Dayton is part of a national trend that has seen court orders dropped and integration recede during the past 20 years.

Schools located in predominantly white neighborhoods in East Dayton have become more white, while schools in largely black neighborhoods west and north of downtown have grown more black since 2002, a Dayton Daily News review of school district data showed.

And as the Dayton district moves toward neighborhood attendance zones in 2006, it appears the stratification will worsen.

Meanwhile, school officials have no plan to encourage diverse schools, instead saying they will focus on equity of educational opportunity through good programs, teachers and principals at all schools.
