Don't Expect As Many Local Road Projects This Year
HAMILTON -- While crafting his 2009 capital projects list, Butler County Engineer Gregory Wilkens fears conditions are conspiring to create congestion on local roadways in coming years. Wilkens said the cost of building and maintaining roads is ballooning -- asphalt prices alone went from $94.50 per cubic yard in April to $122.50 per cubic yard in August -- and the state is shifting the responsibility for local roads to county engineers while it focuses on the aging interstate system.

WEST CHESTER TWP. -- While AK Steel Corp. managed to pull a profit of $4 million in 2008, its fourth-quarter results swung to a $430.6 million loss due to a pension-plan charge and a steep drop in demand for its products, the company reported.
