Sinclair Baseball On Upswing ; Jc Drawing Talent, Success
DAYTON -- Build it and they will come is the storyline from the baseball movie Field of Dreams. Mike Goldschmidt is holding on to that philosophy with the baseball program at Sinclair Community College in downtown Dayton.
OAKWOOD -- Those for and against tours of Hawthorn Hill are looking for a compromise -- and the city's planning commission has tabled the Wright Family Foundation's application. The application seeks to open Hawthorn Hill as a museum for a limited number of regular tours.
KETTERING -- Sister Katie Hoelscher will be retiring from Alter High School on June 30, after more than 30 years of high school teaching and administrative work in the Dayton area. "I never planned to be an administrator," said Hoelscher, 68, the school's principal. "There's a special thing about teaching. I loved the interaction with the kids. As a principal, you have a completely different relationship with the kids. As an administrator, you affect more people in a different way."
KETTERING -- About two dozen Kettering residents attended a meeting of the group Citizens Against Regional Dispatch on May 1 at the Parkview Community Center. CARD is a grassroots organization trying to prevent Kettering's proposed participation in a regional police and fire dispatch center for Montgomery County.
Freedom Grove Grows ; the Trees Honor Two Pioneering Ministers Instrumental in the Camp's Formation.
WASHINGTON TWP., Warren County -- A grove of trees stand in northeastern Warren County in recognition of the contributions of American slaves, the Underground Railroad and two ministers responsible for overcoming racial barriers at the Joy Outdoor Education Center. The camp's Freedom Grove is the first established in Warren County, the 29th since 2003 through a program sponsored by the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center and a Tri-State philanthropist.
TROY -- Miami and Montgomery counties are ready to see if both can save money by jointly seeking bids on trash hauling and landfill contracts. Advertising for bids is about to get under way with a June 18 bid opening in Montgomery County, Jim McGarry, Miami County sanitary engineer, told the Miami County commissioners last week.
Private Donors Made Visit Possible
TIPP CITY -- As with most things in life, a visit by the president of the United States isn't free. George W. Bush's two-hour visit to Tippecanoe High School on April 19 cost local governments, mostly for safety personnel overtime, and drew an undisclosed amount of cash from private pockets.
OAKWOOD -- Parade floats and chalk-drawing contests will be two new additions to this year's That Day In May, the annual Oakwood community event, set for May 19. Events include games, rides, a parade, a 5K run and other activities.
Safety Part of Draw of Afterproms
Parents of students at two high schools in Kettering made sure their juniors and seniors had a fun place to go after their proms last Saturday evening. Following Kettering Fairmont High School's prom at the Trent Arena, junior and seniors and their datesto changed from formal dance clothes into casual attire to enjoy the afterprom party at their school.
To the list of my many failings, add bad plant dad. I had no idea. While not a gardener, I'd always thought of myself as somewhat competent at growing things or, at least, keeping them alive.
Fairmont Grad Batting.540 for Lmu
Remember when Sara Henn was one of the area's most dominant all- around players for Kettering Fairmont High School? She was third in the area with a .540 batting average and posted a 19-7 pitching record with a remarkable 0.18 earned-run average. While Firebird coach Rick Armstrong no longer has the privilege of penciling Henn's name into the lineup, another coach with a Kettering connection does.
Van Buren students to compete in states KETTERING -- Three Van Buren Middle School eighthgraders participating in the recent regional science fair competition were selected to compete at the state level.
DAYTON -- Dayton native and Miss Black Ohio USA Chavin Rucker will travel to Gambia, West Africa, to compete in the Miss Black USA Pageant on June 1. "I'm looking forward to going to Africa. This is a once-in- alifetime opportunity," Rucker said. "I would love to win the pageant. Then I could travel to more countries."
DAYTON -- Each year, when mail carrier Debbie Harber finishes her route during the Stamp Out Hunger food drive, she heads to the Foodbank to help unload. "It's a really good cause and it makes you feel good," said Harber, who delivers mail in Huber Heights.
Oakwood Accordion Band, Alex Meixner Band to perform OAKWOOD -- The Oakwood Accordion Band will perform before the Alex Meixner Band from 6 to 7 p.m. Saturday at the National City 2nd Street Public Market, 600 E. Second St. in Dayton.
DAYTON -- When Dayton Cycling Club co-founder Clair Duckham was born on April 28, 1906, a couple of bicyclists named Orville and Wilbur Wright were perfecting their Wright Flyer on Huffman Prairie. On April 29, Duckham left the Vandalia Recreation Center on a bicycle ride with about 50 family members and Dayton Cycling Club members -- about 100 cyclists -- for his 101st birthday party.
KETTERING -- The vibes from the conversation between Kettering Fairmont High School girls softball coach Rick Armstrong and assistant Mike Hennessey must have silently reached Jamie Schnarr. "Mike and I were talking on Friday (April 27) about what some of the girls have to do in the offseason to get better," Armstrong said.
