Husted Plan Exempts Military ; Military Retirees' Pensions Would Be Exempt From State Income Tax.

COLUMBUS -- The military pensions of approximately 38,640 retired military personnel in Ohio, including many in the Dayton area, would be exempt from the state income tax under proposed legislation announced Tuesday by House Speaker Jon Husted, R-Kettering. The bill would save the veterans more than $23 million annually, based on 2005 state data, Husted said. He said he wants the House to pass the legislation before Veterans Day on Nov. 11.

DAYTON -- Investigators believe an arsonist started the fire at North Main and Helena streets that killed a man and momentarily trapped two other people. Killed was Moses Shackleford, 34, of 1370 Jordan Ave, Dayton. He was visiting an associate in one of the apartments at 1141-1143 N. Main St. when the fire broke out, said Montgomery County Coroner James Davis. Father Struck with Shovel ; Police Say Son and His Mother Lied When They Reported Suicide.

BEAVERCREEK -- Sean L. Greene and his mother, Karla Greene, both lied when they initially told police they found Sean's father dead of an apparent suicide on the back patio of their home early Saturday, according to an affidavit filed in Fairborn Municipal Court. Sean Greene, 20, later told police he hit Dale Greene three to seven times with a shovel during an argument about 3 a.m. Saturday - - roughly three hours before Karla Greene called police to the family's Vineland Trail home.
