Keith Bryson ; Executive Director of Building Bridges, Inc. And Director of George Foster Home
How do you help? "At Building Bridges we work with at-risk youth referred mostly from Montgomery County Juvenile Court. We work with nearly 300 kids per year who mostly remain in the community at home or in individual foster care. Many of these youth have been unsuccessful at completing traditional forms of probation and are often considered high risk or high needs cases. "For the kids in the community we provide structured programming that includes work therapy, recreational activities, advo...
Janney Remains a Star You Can Look Up To
When she joined The West Wing, Allison Janney was a bigger star than the other two Dayton products in the cast. She just wasn't the best known. The talented actress is 6-foot tall, although her father, Dayton commercial real estate developer Jervis Janney, prefers "5-foot- 12." Either way, she's a tiny bit taller than Rob Lowe. And a large bit taller than Martin Sheen who, in one episode of the NBC show, looks up at her and asks if she is getting taller.
Mother Multiplies Her Love by 13
Ruth Mae Pitstick had a ready answer whenever someone asked her which one of her 13 children she loved the most. "I remember saying that any mother has the same answer -- you love them all the same, but you give special love to the one that needs you the most at any given moment."
HARRISON TWP., Montgomery County -- A Dayton man was apparently shot to death early Saturday morning in the driveway of a Greenhill Road home. The Montgomery County Coroner's Office identified the victim as Edward Washington. No age or address was provided.
DAYTON -- Hundreds of best friends took a scenic walk along the downtown riverfront Saturday morning. They even got to sniff out new friends at the same time. Like burly Boxer Ali, who ran into a firecracker of a Pomeranian before his best friend, Phyllis Downing, started the walk.
Gregory to Inmates: Attitude Key
JEFFERSON TWP., Montgomery County -- When the most affordable place for black Americans to find steady shelter, food and education is a prison, "something's wrong with the system," comedian and civil rights activist Dick Gregory told about 60 inmates Saturday at the Dayton Correctional Institution. Gregory was in town to give the keynote address at PowerNet of Dayton's Raising the Bar conference about helping ex-offenders rejoin society, rebuild their lives and improve inner-city communities.
WASHINGTON TWP., Montgomery County -- Washington Twp. placed zoning inspector Dave Douglas on administrative leave Dec. 7 -- the same day he forwarded documents to the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office accusing township trustees Lee Snyder and Terry Blair of conflicts of interest involving their businesses. Douglas' allegations have led to an ongoing state ethics investigation and a review by Cincinnati attorney Deborah Grayson, who was hired by the township to review his documents. But whil...
WASHINGTON --House Majority Leader John Boehner stood before a hotel conference room packed with Dayton-area leaders recently and summarized the past three months in simple and stark terms. "It's a pretty good job when things are going well," he said. "But as you know, things haven't been going very well."
Dayton Strickland's First Campaign Stop
DAYTON -- Democratic gubernatorial nominee Ted Strickland made Dayton the first stop in what he calls his campaign to release Ohio politics from the grip of the Republican party. Strickland outlined his policies to party supporters Saturday morning at the Montgomery County Democrat Party Headquarters while assailing Republican leadership in Ohio and across the country.
Running for a Cause and Running for the Fun of It
Yesterday was the first Saturday in months I was able to sleep in. And I hated it. As someone who has never relished competitive sports, you'd think I'd be thrilled to be done with my five-month Team in Training commitment to raise funds for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society while competing in Cincinnati's eighth annual Flying Pig Marathon.
