Red-Faced, but Happy to Be Wrong

CINCINNATI -- Is my face red, as red as an old Cincinnati Reds cap? No, the new Cincinnati Reds general manager isn't Jim Beattie, the man I all but anointed as the winner in Wednesday's Dayton Daily News.

Flyers' Scott Misses Fourth Straight Game to Foot Injury

WASHINGTON -- Junior forward Monty Scott (stress fracture, left foot) missed his fourth straight game when the Dayton Flyers lost a 81-67 Atlantic 10 basketball game to George Washington on Wednesday night. UD Coach Brian Gregory said Scott's foot will be scanned on Friday, but he will not play Saturday against Saint Louis even if the doctors give him the green light to practice. Since the Flyers have next week off, Scott could be ready to return to the lineup against La Salle on Feb. 18.

Hetrick Roast has Big Surprise ; Retiring Versailles Coach Given New Ford Explorer

VERSAILLES -- It's a good thing they decided to wait until Al Hetrick retired. "It's my understanding that in the early 1990s, after he won his second state title, Dick Berger, Fred Condon and Jim Phelan, my father, wanted to get him something for winning the state title again," Tim Phelan said. "Basically, they decided to wait to put it together until after he retired."

George Washington Handles Flyers, 81-67 ; Ud Falls to 11-13 in Loss to Colonials

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Don't count the University of Dayton Flyers among those who doubt whether George Washington should be ranked among the top 10 NCAA Division I teams in the country. Flashing all of its weapons, GW put on quite a show while trouncing the Flyers, 81-67, in front of a sellout crowd of 5,000 at the Smith Center. It was the 11th consecutive victory for the eighth- ranked Colonials, who are now 19-1 and 9-0 in the Atlantic 10 Conference and have equaled the best start in the prog...

Buckeyes' Stretch Run Begins in Michigan ; Players Trying Not to Peek at Brutal Upcoming Schedule

COLUMBUS -- Ohio State's Thad Matta has been part coach and part sensei these days, mixing in timeless wisdom with basketball fundamentals for his grasshoppers ... er, players. The 19th-ranked Buckeyes begin a gruesome stretch of games tonight that will determine whether they'll contend for their first Big Ten crown since 2002 or join the pack of teams scrapping for one of the remaining first-round byes in the conference tournament.

Gymnast Was Down, but Not Out ; Centerville's Coen Recovers From Scary Auto Accident, Is Ready to Compete

CENTERVILLE -- Waking up in the emergency room, Centerville senior Katie Coen had a question for her doctor. "Did I break anything?" Coen asked. "I can't break anything, I'm a gymnast."

Krivsky Gets Reds Gm Job ; 51-Year-Old Calls Himself 'an Old-School Kind of Guy'

CINCINNATI -- There was a flight to Cincinnati on Tuesday night and a second interview Wednesday morning. "The next thing I know," said Wayne Krivsky over clicking cameras and bright lights, "I'm in a side room."

Timm has Plenty of Memories of '68

DAYTON -- Former Bobsledder Chuck Timm, a supervisor for test technical services at DP&L, where he's worked for 38 years, recalls his experiences as a member of the 1968 U.S. Olympic team during the winter games in Grenoble, France. "I remember when they played the national anthem, everyone felt goose bumps," he said. "They had (helicopters) come over and they showered the stadium with thousands of scented roses."

Club Hockey Team Sweeps Acha's No. 1-Ranked School

They started out as a Division III team in the American College Hockey Association (ACHA), but the Wright State club hockey team won't be in that classification for long. The team probably will move up soon. "We were fifth in the nation last year," coach Chris Sands said. "We were No. 3 this year, then we beat the No. 1 team, Calvin, in two games last weekend."

Bombers Acquire 8th Goalie

FAIRBORN -- Just call him No. 8. That won't be David Currie's number, but it might as well be. Desperate for a goaltender with Mike Ayers in Syracuse again and Sean Broderick out of commission with a concussion, Bombers coach Don MacAdam acquired Currie on Tuesday from the Victoria Salmon Kings for future considerations.

This Story has an Olympic Ring

Dayton ended up with one of its very few Winter Olympians thanks to a song and a sign. The former was a Shirley Ellis tune that Chuck Timm was belting out that 1963 day as he was running a buffer over his barracks floor at Plattsburgh Air Force Base in New York: "Three, six, nine. "The goose drank wine. "The monkey chewed tobacco on the street car line ..."

Horizon Run Hits Detroit Road Block

DETROIT -- That drive toward second place in the Horizon League took a detour for the Wright State Raiders Wednesday night, and not exactly in Motown's fast lane. Shut-down defense and free throws dominated in the final six minutes of the first half, when Detroit nearly shut out the Raiders on the way to a 70-66 victory at Calihan Hall.

Win Gives Centerville Girls Three-Way Tie for Gwoc East Crown ; Beavercreek, Fairmont Also Come Through in Clutch Games to Share Title

CENTERVILLE-- There were no surprises Wednesday night. No detours from expected outcomes as Centerville, Beavercreek and Fairmont won their girls high school basketball games. It was Centerville over Troy, 56-36; Beavercreek 56, Xenia 51; and Fairmont 55, Trotwood-Madison 24.

Kitna Ready to Hit Open Market ; Qb Will Listen to Team's Offer, but Wants to Try Free Agency

CINCINNATI -- Jon and Jennifer Kitna are expecting the birth of their fourth child any day now. They're eager to add another "J name" to the family tree that includes sons Jordan and Jalen, and daughter Jada.

Springboro Hires New Football Coach ; Wilhite Leaving Offensive Coordinator Post at Wayne

SPRINGBORO -- Ryan Wilhite has been appointed new head football coach at Springboro High School, beating out a field of 50 applicants. The Wayne offensive coordinator will be confirmed Tuesday at the district's board of education meeting. Doug Ramsey, the Cincinnati Elder coach who has guided the Panthers to two state titles (2002-03) was the other finalist. The Springboro administration feels the school found the right man for the job.

Minton Happy for Assistant

Wayne football coach Jay Minton wishes Ryan Wilhite the best at Springboro -- right up until the Warriors face the Panthers. "That's going to be exciting," Minton said of his offensive coordinator taking Springboro's head coaching job. "They are in our league now in a different division.
