Centrist Bloc Could Agree On Much ; Current Divide Leaves Many Out

S h o u l d n ' t some substantial group of people be proposing a centrist party? Listen to all the griping these days

Make Neighborhood Safer Place to Live

RIVERSIDE RESIDENTS HAVE AN IMPORTANT safety issue on the May 3 ballot. The city has placed a five-year temporary levy on the ballot for police department operations. The money will be used to reinstate police officer positions previously eliminated in order to balance the city's budget.

Temple Knows What Dayton Needs

In the primary election to be held on May 3, Dayton residents will have the opportunity to vote for who will be running for mayor in November. As a resident of Brookville, a suburb of Dayton, I am a concerned citizen for the whole Miami Valley. What happens in Dayton affects all the surrounding communities. Dayton needs strong leadership. I believe the best candidate for mayor is Barbara Temple. Temple has the experience and heart needed to move Dayton forward. Her 28 years of experience in t...

Doctor-Lawyer Fight Still Lacks Facts

THE OHIO MEDICAL MALPRACTICE COMMISsion completed its work this week. Commission members, to their credit, analyzed a complicated subject in ways that enable the public to understand what's at issue. But discerning the truth requires checking with two reports -- one by the commission majority, the other by two dissenting members. The split was inevitable given how the commission came into being. It was the product of the leap-before-you-look approach to public policy-making.

Brac Goes Public; Much Already Done

IN THE NERVE-RACKING PROCESS KNOWN AS BRAC, the big event comes in the middle of May. That's when the Pentagon releases its recommendations for the closing of military bases and the moving of their activities to other bases. Then the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) commission takes up those recommendations. It usually approves most of them. Then Congress either accepts or rejects the decisions as a whole or rejects them as a whole.

Speak Up: Brief Comments

- Re "RiverScape plans to add whitewater park," April 28: How can anyone suggest a whitewater park at RiverScape when those expensive fountains have never worked properly? - The revenue raised from a whitewater park at RiverScape would not warrant the money taxpayers would have to pay to have this park built.

Mclin has Been a Great Mayor

It is time for straight talk about how important Mayor Rhine McLin has been for Dayton and the region. McLin has been a great mayor, and she is committed and passionate about a bright future for Dayton, as she works on the city's behalf with partners throughout the area. With her strong leadership and an established city team, I am confident that Dayton's best days are in sight. The hard choices are being made under McLin's leadership to achieve financial stability for our city, while maintai...

Show Support for Community

As president of the Mad River Board of Education, I'm asking voters to stand behind our schools and work toward improving and maintaining quality education for 3,500 elementary and secondary students. By supporting our operating levy on May 3, you are supporting our community and our children's future. As a community, we cannot attract families, new businesses and jobs without providing excellent schools.

Operating Funds Needed for Facilities

This community passed a bond issue in 2002. The community has benefited with the addition of outstanding facilities, and citizens' use of the school library, weight room, community rooms, Northridge Community Park, pavilion, ball diamonds, tennis courts, track, football stadium and a new middle school gym. The citizens of Northridge did this for their children. Now we need funds to operate these facilities.

Mclin Deserves Chance at Second Term

Mayor Rhine McLin has demonstrated strong leadership during trying times for the city of Dayton. McLin has been a consensus- builder among her colleagues on the Dayton City Commission. During her term, the commission has made a concerted effort to work together to address the city's challenges. McLin has focused on restoring Dayton's financial health and should be commended for the efforts of the city manager and his team to identify solutions to serious problems. In the meantime, McLin helpe...

Stay Committed to Education

As a real estate agent, I travel throughout the Dayton area and show prospective homebuyers homes for sale. When I show people homes in the Riverside area, they consistently remark, "The school district has such new and beautiful schools." Riverside residents have consistently supported our schools in many ways. Chief among these has been stepping up and voting yes on school levies.

Police Protection Worth It

The Riverside police levy is an important issue. Recently, the marker board in front of Riverside City Hall proclaimed what we all know: "Police Protection Priceless." Please remember that protection is 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.

Bohardt has Right Priorities

The most important services a city government provides to its citizens are excellent police and fire protection. Only with these key elements can business development, neighborhood rejuvenation and promotion of our downtown be successful. When the unfortunate and preventable situation recently occurred downtown at Third and Main streets, the mayor was quoted in the Dayton Daily News as pleading with the RTA. I submit that someone should have been leading.

Mclin has More Experience

After careful consideration, I have decided to support the reelection of Dayton Mayor Rhine McLin. McLin's leadership experience far exceeds her opponents, and I believe she deserves a second term to continue working on her vision for the city of Dayton. Her dedication to creating an arts destination is also very exciting. I believe she is capable of being the city's promoter, while at the same time keeping a watchful eye on the city's financial direction.

Bohardt Gets Things Done

Dayton needs new leadership, and I believe David Bohardt is the perfect candidate for the job. I have read columns he has written, I have listened to him speak, and I have watched his work in our city's neighborhoods. He knows how to get things done by creating win-win solutions.
