Election 2004 The Swing States: Down To The Wire

Moraine Losing 1,150 Jobs As Gm Slashes Costs Third Shift Tobecut

MORAINE -- City officials breathed a collective sigh of relief Monday that the Moraine Assembly Plant does not appear on General Motors' list of plant closings. And they remain optimistic despite the company's announcement that "the third shift will be removed at Moraine, Ohio, during 2006, with timing to be based on market demand."

Holiday Travelers May Battle Snow

DAYTON-- About 37.3 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more from their homes for the Thanksgiving holiday, a slight 0.8 percent increase from last year's 37 million travelers, according to the American Automobile Association. And talk about giving thanks -- gasoline prices are 32 cents higher than a year ago, according to national AAA estimates, but are down a dramatic 48 cents during the past month.

Cutsaim Tosave $7billion

DAYTON -- General Motors Corp. said Monday it will eliminate 30,000 jobs nationwide, including as many as 1,150 in Moraine, as part of a major restructuring that will close nine assembly, stamping and powertrain plants and three parts and service centers by 2008. At the same time, the Moraine plant may be helped by GM's decision to close a sister plant in Oklahoma City. That plant makes extended versions of the same sport utility vehicles made at GM's Moraine Assembly plant.

Vectren Raises Price of Budget Bill Option

Vectren Corp. said Monday nearly half of its residential Budget Bill customers in Ohio could see their monthly heating bills increase by an average of $25 starting this month or next. The increase is designed to offset the higher cost of natural gas caused by increased demand, tight supplies and damage caused by Hurricane Katrina to Gulf Coast distribution facilities, Vectren spokesman Mike Roeder said.
