Newcom Tavern in Distress ; Historic Structure Nears Ruin From Natural Forces
DAYTON -- As Dayton nears 2005 -- the city's 200th anniversary of incorporation -- its oldest house faces possible ruin from age, natural forces and some wellmeant remodeling. The 1796 Newcom Tavern, in Carillon Historical Park, is infested with birds, animals and insects while its rotting hewn timbers struggle against unforgiving concrete chink and daub. Past renovations and moves of the structure have placed added stress on it.
Winning Streak May Be in 'Jeopardy'
Lest we forget: Ken Jennings, the king of arcane knowledge, missed the question about Dayton and the 100th anniversary of powered flight. Jennings, a mild-mannered, nondescript software engineer from Salt Lake City, showed up June 2 on the popular syndicated gameshow Jeopardy!, winning $37,201 and setting in motion a record-setting streak that has to date earned him nearly $2.5 million during his 74 appearances.

Rice Shifts His Status, but Not His Workload
DAYTON -- When U.S. District Judge Walter H. Rice moves to senior status at midnight, nothing will change in his workload Wednesday or next week or next month and might not for a year or more. Rice's move has triggered a process that could add a fulltime judge to the bench in the Southern District of Ohio within a year while Rice continues to carry a full caseload, a prerogative he retains under his new rank.
